A lot more than Kulik’s man & horse at the M.Žilinskas gallery, Kaunas

Exhibition "Mirábile Visu / Amazing to see" at M.Žilinskas Art Gallery in Kaunas, Lithuania during its opening on December 14, 2011

Exhibition „Mirábile Visu / Nuostabu matyti“ @ M.Žilinskas Art Gallery in Kaunas, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the National M.K.Čiurlionis Art Museum, is really worth visiting.

The reason is not only a recent scandal when a group of young pupils have noticed and watched a video of a controversial perfornamce by Oleg Kulik about man and horse. The HUGE exhibition lays out documents and pieces of art retracing the founding the first art museum of the newly founded Lithuanian state in the early 20th century. Therefore the exhibition is rich with history, development of buidlings, creating the collection, but most notably, the art of the 20th century (sure, not only) of Lithuania and the neighboring countries. Those sharing my passion for modernism years and inter-war period arts should not be dissapointed. Those liking Frantisek Drtkol should discover photography by a Lithuanian young woman Domicelė Tarabildienė, who was staging stylish self-portraits & nudes in the same time framework.

I visited the exhibition briefly on the opening day, and I have not spotted the Kulik’s performance video. When reviewing the handful of pictures i took, i start noticing that horses indeed appear in the works exhibited: in paintings and prints. Paradoxally enough, in my photos I find peoples looks avoiding the horses. What if the curators have embedded a hidden idea in the representation of hores, in order to make them (sort of) invisible?.. Well, one of these horses in a video with a naked man was noticed by a group of young pupils, which launched a media interest in the exhibition.

<: … Well, enough of writing nonsences … :>
