Prize Winners and the Participants of the main program

Kaunas Photo 07, member of Photofestival Union, the only annual festival of photography in Baltic States has already begun its spring session with the exhibitions of honor guest Georgia and exhibitions dedicated to Kaunas City Celebration.

With the spring session, Kaunas Photo 07 announces the prize winners and the list of artists selected through the open competition, whose works will be exposed in solo, group exhibitions or slide shows in the autumn session of Kaunas Photo 07.

The events of Kaunas City Celebration are surmounted by the exhibition of German photographer André Siegfried Wagner, the Kaunas Photo 07 prize winner for photography about Kaunas. His exhibition called “Kaunas – Town of Light” was opened on 18 May in the Kaunas castle participating hundreds of visitors. André Wagner was invited and spent a week in Kaunas, creating his own photographic vision of this town.

Kaunas Photo 07 has received more than 100 offers from the authors of all over the world, with increasing participation of photographers from Asia, America and Australia.

As the festival director Mindaugas Kavaliauskas says, “among suggested photo collections high artistic quality prevails. There are almost no unprofessional or amateurish works of arguable quality”.

With the aim of selecting three best portfolios, distinguishing the Grand Prix winner among them, the selection jury spent two sessions, 5 hours each approximately. The art director of festival Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, assistant curators Rūta Varnaitė and Aurelijus Madzeliauskas, photographers and art critics Gintaras Česonis and Tomas Pabedinskas, presided by the famous photographer Romualdas Požerskis have revised almost 150 applications and have selected the authors of best photo collections presented.

Three artists will get the main prizes – personal exhibitions during the festival. They will be awarded with a trip coverage (only EU citizens the EU) and accommodation in Kaunas in September 2007 during the festival events.

One of these winners will be awarded with the Kaunas Photo 07 Grand Prix and will be granted with a monographic catalog of the work presented to Kaunas Photo 07 competition.

Due to creative excellence of numerous portfolios, 3 more special mentions were distinguished.

Because of small amount of requests from Asia it has been decided not to organize the separate expo cycle dedicated to Asian photography. The project of the honor guest of Kaunas Photo 07 - Georgian contemporary photography, has been developed with the help of Ms. Natia Tsulukidze, curator at the National Gallery in Tbilisi.

Proposals of photography about Kaunas were not numerous, but the Prize for photography about Kaunas – a trip to Kaunas plus a week of accommodation for a development of creation in Kaunas found its owner.
